Moving in to Milton Keynes

First steps:

If you are moving in to Milton Keynes from another local authority, with a child with  an education health and care plan (EHCP) you will need to make the team aware you are planning to do this. Please contact the team on EHCP@milton-keynes.gov.uk

All of the schools in Milton Keynes are listed under schools and lifelong learning, which details what type of school they are and relevant details for further information. We would advise you to look at the schools in Milton Keynes.

Please contact your current SEN Team at your local authority to advise that you are moving, once you have a date and the new address. There is a space on the SEN Transfer In form where you can give the contact details of your previous SEN Team and we will then ask them to transfer the SEN File to us.

Next steps:

Before we can start looking for a school place, we would also need you to send us some documents then too. If you could complete the SEN Transfer In Form and send it to us at EHCP@milton-keynes.gov.uk  We will require proof of your Milton Keynes address to be sent to us at the same time. You must include:

  • a solicitor’s letter to confirm exchange of contracts
  • or a copy of your signed tenancy
  • or Milton Keynes council tax reference number

In addition, we will also need to have a copy of the most up to date EHC Plan, including any paperwork from reviews where the EHCP has not yet been updated.

We will start consulting with the mainstream schools of your choice, or those that are closest to your home address, once we have these documents.

Moving to Milton Keynes with a child with an EHCP to mainstream school:

In Milton Keynes, any child with an EHC Plan does not necessarily have to attend a school closest to their home address; parents/carers can ask us to consult with any mainstream school/s within Milton Keynes.

In the event  that a family ask the Home To School Transport Team (HTST) for transport to a mainstream school that is further away, we may still look at consulting with your nearest school if they can meet need.

If a school close to home said they could meet needs, it is likely that HTST will turn down your application to them, as the school chosen is parental preference, rather than needs based and you would then need to arrange the transport yourself.

Moving to Milton Keynes with a child with an EHCP to special school:

If a special school is the parental preference, the process is slightly different. We would usually start with looking at mainstream schools first. We do this whether a family feels that their child needs to be in specialist provision or not, as we parallel plan. If the preference would be a special school, we would ask one of our EHC Specialist Teaching Team to carry out a home visit, to explore what type of school would be most appropriate.

If a child was already attending a special school, we would ask one of our EHC Specialist Teaching Team to carry out a home visit, to explore what type of school would be most appropriate. The team would then feed this information back along with what your views are and what type of school you feel is appropriate.

If specialist provision is felt to be the most appropriate option, the child will be added to the next Special School Panel Agenda for discussion. Depending on the outcome from panel, we will then consult with our special schools, if that is what panel has agreed.

Consultations with the schools are something that we do for you, rather than you having to do anything.
