Tips for improving spelling
- From Key stage 2 and above ALWAYS provide the pupil with the correct spelling written down as spelling is a largely visual skill
- The majority of words children will come across at this age are not phonetically regular so need to be taught as sight (whole) words
- Point out common letter strings
- Highlight these in a different colour
- Provide a high frequency word wall in front of the child when asking them to write
- Experiment with different writing and drawing equipment
- Practise writing the spellings in big letters in the air
- Encourage a cursive (joined up) script
- Provide opportunities for dictating work (particularly helpful at secondary school)
- Encourage visualisation of letters and words
